COMPETITION INSIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Gian<\/p>\n

arena\u2019s Elite Team swimmers broke 6 Championship Records<\/strong> and 1 World Record<\/strong> on the first two days of the European Short Course Championships in Netanya, Israel. Leading the charge (as usual) is The Iron Lady from Hungary, Katinka Hossz\u00fa<\/strong>, who set a new 400 IM world mark just a half-hour into the Championships. In the evening\u2019s final, she couldn\u2019t match her morning swim of 4:19.46, but still won comfortably with a fast 4:19.75. Katinka went on to break 3 CRs on the second day, winning 100 back in a time of 55.42, and leading the 100 IM prelims and semis with times of 57.52 in the morning and 57.49 in the evening.<\/p>\n

First gold medal winner of the Championships was Poland\u2019s Rados\u0142aw Kaw\u0119cki<\/strong>, who set a new CR of 1:48.33 with his 200 backstroke victory. \u201cYesterday was really my day, I had a feeling it was gonna be a great day from the early morning, I had a good sleep and breakfast,<\/em>\u201d he said afterwards. \u201cI also think that those Haribo jelly bears I ate in the morning also helped, I slept like a bear in between the races.<\/em>\u201d Radek leads the field going into tonight\u2019s 100 back final.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s Marco Koch<\/strong> continued his great form of the past 18 months with a 200 breaststroke gold in a new CR of 2:00.53. Marco was just 0.05s shy of the WR set in 2014 by Hungary\u2019s D\u00e1niel Gyurta<\/strong>, who came in second. Koch\u2019s compatriot Paul Biedermann<\/strong> also enjoyed a successful two days in the last international SC championships of his career, with the 200 free gold and 400 free silver.<\/p>\n

Swedish star Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m<\/strong> asserted herself in usual fashion with a 24.58 CR in the 50 fly final, along with the second-fastest 100 free semi. She and leading semi-finalist Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> of the Netherlands will battle it out for the 100 free crown tonight.<\/p>\n

On the Championships\u2019 second night, perennial champion and challenger L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Cseh<\/strong> of Hungary celebrated his 30th birthday with the 100 fly title, the 17th of a glittering European SC career that goes all the way back to 2002 in Riesa, Germany.<\/p>\n

Other arena medal winners over the first 2 days were Hannah Miley (Great Britain, 400 IM silver), Adam Peaty (Great Britain, 50 breast silver) and Sharon van Rouwendaal (Netherlands, 800 free bronze).<\/p>\n
