BRONTE CAMPBELL AND MARCO KOCH ENJOY A GOLDEN NIGHT IN KAZAN Australian Bronte won the 100m freestyle with sister Cate in third, the pair sandwiching Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m of Sweden with the top five finishers all Arena swimmers.<\/p>\n Marco, of Germany, claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke while Rados\u0142aw Kaw\u0119cki was second in the 200m backstroke.<\/p>\n Both\u00a0Bronte Campbell<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Cate Campbell<\/strong>\u00a0have enjoyed healthy competition for many years and benefit from training together. Cate approached the 100m freestyle final as defending champion but Bronte led from start to finish and set a new personal best of 52.52, 0.18secs ahead of\u00a0Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m<\/strong>\u00a0with Cate third in 52.82. Bronte beamed: \u201cI couldn’t believe it when I turned round and I saw 1 next to my name and saw the time as well. That is everyone’s dream: that is why you train, you want to be the best, you want to be the best you can be. And today I happened to the best in the world and that sounds really strange coming out of my mouth, truly surreal, it hasn’t sunk in yet.\u201d<\/p>\n A proud Cate added: \u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic night for the Campbell family; it’s a fantastic night for Australia. I still got to stand up on the podium and sing the national anthem and I couldn’t be prouder of my little sister. I knew I hadn’t won and when I saw a 1 next to a Campbell I was like \u2018oh my goodness there’s only one other Campbell in the world in this pool at this moment and it’s not me so it has to be Bronte.\u201d<\/p>\n Marco Koch<\/strong>\u00a0swam a well-executed race to add the 200m breaststroke world title to the European gold he won in Berlin last year. The German was third at halfway but moved through the field to touch in 2mins 07.76secs with D\u00e1niel Gyurta in third. Marco said: \u201cWhen I looked at the scoreboard and recognised the time I thought it’s not that good. Then I noticed that I am the world champion which is amazing. I’m really happy and now being the world champion I will go to Burger King at last!\u201d<\/p>\n Poland\u2019s\u00a0Rados\u0142aw Kaw\u0119cki<\/strong>\u00a0was also a European champion in 2014 and he won his second consecutive world silver in the 200m backstroke in 1min 54.55secs. He said: \u201cOn the one hand I’m satisfied with the medal, on the other hand I’m a bit disappointed as I changed my plan for the finals. In the semis, I went out fast, now I had a slower start and that was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Cseh<\/strong>\u00a0will be favourite going into the 100m butterfly final after becoming the first swimmer to post a sub 51-second time since the Olympics in 2012.
