There was excitement galore on a breathless night of swimming on the second day of the FINA World Championships in Kazan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungarian Katinka Hossz\u00fa and Sweden\u2019s Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m both set new world records in the 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly respectively.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adam Peaty snatched victory from Cameron van der Burgh on the final stroke of a breath-taking 100m breaststroke while L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Cseh and Konrad Czerniak were joint third in the 50m butterfly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Katinka Hossz\u00fa<\/strong> had twice lowered her own European individual medley record in the heats and semi-finals and admitted she had the world record in her sights, if not in Russia then in the near future.<\/p>\n

Katinka \u2013 who is known as the \u2018Iron Lady\u2019<\/strong> – was outside world-record pace at the halfway point but her breaststroke and freestyle legs propelled her to the finish in 2:06.12 and into the history books.<\/p>\n

Tears welled in the eyes of the 26-year-old who celebrated with husband and coach Shane Tusup. Katinka said: \u201cBefore the race I was just trying to give my best and race as fast as possible and then there was a record. It was just perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m<\/strong> had broken the 100m butterfly world record on the first day and she lowered it again by a tenth of a second in the final as she won gold in 55.64secs.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old beamed: \u201cI knew there was more pressure coming into the final so I am very happy and have shown myself I can swim faster even with all the pressure. I have been waiting six years to break my personal best time. I did it at the Sette Colli and now I have taken a few more tenths of a second so finally!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Peaty<\/strong> and Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> had been trading blows like prize-fighters in the 100m breaststroke heats and semi-finals.<\/p>\n

South African Cameron has never won the 100m world title but it appeared that might change when he led by half a body length at the turn after he sizzled up the first 50m.<\/p>\n

Adam, of Great Britain, clawed him back inch by inch and went ahead at the final stroke to edge out the Olympic champion by 0.07secs in 58.52secs.<\/p>\n

When asked how he had managed the victory, Adam said: \u201cI\u2019m not quite sure. I don\u2019t even know what time I was out in. I turned and saw his feet and I was like \u2018right, I\u2019ve got some catching up to do now.\u2019 Twenty-five metres out he was still in front so I was a bit sceptical but I remembered what I had trained for was moments like this and I came out on top thankfully.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron said: \u201cYou have to try and swim your own race and that is what happened. I am happy to just be swimming fast again, the better man on the day won so congratulations to Adam, a silver medal is nothing to be sad about at the World Championships.\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Cseh<\/strong> and Konrad Czerniak<\/strong> shared bronze in the one-length butterfly in 23.15.<\/p>\n

For L\u00e1szl\u00f3 the 50m is a whole new event and he said: \u201cIt was an adventure as I never really raced in any sprint events. Still, it was quite a success and I\u2019m happy with this medal \u2013 but it\u2019s just a great message that I\u2019m in a good shape, I have a good speed, after all, it\u2019s not a disadvantage if you can swim a bit faster in the 200m fly either.\u201d<\/p>\n
