SUPERFLY SARAH SOARS INTO THE RECORD BOOKS VAN DER BURGH AND PEATY HEAT UP FOR THE BIG SHOW OFF<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the FINA World Championship in Kazan the first day of swimming offered plenty of action for swimming fans in attendance and around the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Swedish Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m ignited the excitement by setting a new world record in the 100m butterfly \u2013 an incredible start to the 8 day competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adam Peaty and Cameron van der Burgh traded blows like two heavyweight boxers in the 100m breaststroke semi-finals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the first night of competition, Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m<\/strong> set the ball rolling as she lowered the 100m butterfly world record to 55.74, slicing 0.24secs off the mark set by American Dana Vollmer at the 2012 Olympics.<\/p>\n

Despite only being 21, it is the second time Sarah has held the world record having first flown into the history books back at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.<\/p>\n

She beamed: \u201cOf course this record was meant to be broken. It was my plan all along \u2013 to beat a record at these Championships. I\u2019ve had more competition in training because I race with the boys and this has helped.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Men\u2019s 100m breaststroke, Cameron Van Der Burgh<\/strong> set a championship record of 58.49, that lasted just a few minutes with his British rival Adam Peaty<\/strong> slicing a big chunk off as he stopped the clock in 58.18. The final takes place tonight and it looks to be an exciting one!<\/p>\n

In the women\u2019s freestyle relay, Bronte Campbell<\/strong> swam the fastest leg of the entire field in 51.77. She handed over to older sister Cate Campbell<\/strong>with the Australians holding a clear lead over the Netherlands<\/strong>, coming second. Cate brought them home in a championship record time of 3mins 31.48secs.<\/p>\n

Bronte said: \u201cIn 2013 we came second and that was amazing but this time standing up on the podium together in front of the world and getting to sing the national anthem with your big sister is something not many people get to do so it\u2019s definitely the highlight of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cate added: \u201cI saw clear water from the time I entered until the time I touched.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dutch Sharon van Rouwendaal<\/strong> was shocked after winning the 400m freestyle silver in 4:03.02, days after a gruelling open water programme. She said: \u201cAfter my 10k I asked can I recover? My coach said to me in the last 50m everyone will be feeling the pain. But no-one is as strong as you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Iron Lady, Katinka Hossz\u00fa<\/strong> lowered her own European 200m individual medley record to 2:07.30 in the morning heats before slicing it further to 2:06.84 in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n
