Katinka Hosszu completes Midmar Mile
9th-10th February 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Hungarian pool beauty, Katinka Hosszu proved that she was no ‘one trick pony’, as she swam her way to fourth place victory, on the 40th anniversary of the ‘Midmar Mile’.<\/p>\n

With up to 18,000 participants,\u00a0South Africa’s\u00a0‘Midmar Mile’ is the world’s largest swimming event, and for Katinka, her first open water experience.<\/p>\n

After such an incredible result, we\u00a0wondered whether\u00a0the Pink Lady\u00a0<\/em>would consider a move from pool to open water, and this is what she had to say…<\/p>\n

\u201cThe open water was completely different from the pool. In the pool I have control of my race,\u00a0and know exactly where I’m swimming and how much further I have to go. In the open water I felt as though I had\u00a0little control.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On the Midmar Mile……<\/p>\n

“I got off to a good start, and was able to get out in front early on.\u00a0 Everyone\u00a0was swimming frantically, in such close proximity, it was difficult to see straight. So, when\u00a0when Ashley Twichell swam up close to me, I thought it would be a good idea to\u00a0allow her to take the lead, as she is experienced in open water swimming, and should be able to swim straight.<\/em><\/p>\n

Unfortunately,\u00a0when she passed me, my goggles\u00a0got hit and\u00a0then filled up with water.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Instead of stopping to adjust them, Katinka continued to swim on blindly, laughing…<\/p>\n

\u201cI had no idea what direction I was swimming in.\u00a0I was so difficult to see, I just kept on going what I thought was straight, but was later told that I was anything but straight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In her own words, \u201c I\u00a0was swimming in a\u00a0mindless fashion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She then\u00a0went on to say…<\/p>\n

\u201cThe finish was pretty exciting, every swimmer had to run out of the water and stop the time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Although she really enjoyed the Midmar Mile, Katinka certainly won\u2019t be hanging up her pool goggles just yet. She definately prefers the pool, where she has her own lane and does not come in to direct\u00a0contact with other swimmers. She\u00a0would however, like to try more open water swims, but quickly added \u201cthe short ones only.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ashley Twichell won the race, followed by Keri-Anne Payne and Michelle Weber.<\/p>\n
