Why do they do it?<\/p>\n<p>We put this question to Thomas\u2026<br \/>\n<i>\u201cI have a natural talent in swimming long distances. \u00a0It\u2019s very tough, but I really like the challenges it brings\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>On mental preparation\u2026<br \/>\n<i>\u201cIt\u2019s enough for you to know your individual race goals, and try to reach them\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>What do you eat prior to a swim Thomas?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cNormally I try to eat a lot of carbohydrates\u201d. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>and Drink?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cAgain carbohydrates, along with energy gels. Drinking is very important\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>How do you cope when the water is rough?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cRough water is really hard, everyone feels the waves, but you just have to accept them, and get on with it\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>What is the strangest thing you have ever come up against in the water?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cDead animals! \u00a0Rats, turtles and even sharks\u201d\u2026.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i>But Thomas, are you a shark? or are you perhaps a jellyfish or Manatees?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cHaha, Hopefully I&#8217;m a shark, because they get to eat first\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i>What has been your scariest moment in the open water?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cSharks in Hawaii\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Funniest?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cI was in a warm up swim, and a guy was drafting behind me. He even followed me when i swam in circles\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>What has been the highlight of your career?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cThe London Olympics! The 10K Marathon swim was a great event, with many spectators. Of course my result was\u00a0good also\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i>So Thomas, what advice can you give to anyone wishing to enter from pool to open water?<br \/>\n<i>\u201cCollect as much experience as possible, because every race is different\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i>Lastly, we asked Thomas who his sports hero was as a kid, and he responded with:<br \/>\n<i>\u201cMy Brother\u201d\u2026 (Stefan Lurz is both brother and coach to Thomas)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>So if you decide to swim open water, remember to avoid the sharks, and if you can\u2019t avoid them, ensure you swim faster than your opponents!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas followed his Water Instinct&#8230;&#8230;.
