Technically speaking, it is completely different from all the other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strokes, even in terms of where your forward thrust comes from, which is mainly from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leg movement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (70% legs and 30% arms). This makes breaststroke vastly different from freestyle in which power is generated from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tritonwear.com\/the-history-of-freestyle-swimming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% legs and 60% arms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we\u2019ll guide you through the basics of how to perform a solid breaststroke <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimming technique<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s no use having the perfect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frog kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if it\u2019s paired up with a weak <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arm pull<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Let\u2019s see how we can perfect the most complex <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimming stroke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Body Position<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your body horizontal in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">streamlined position<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in line with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surface of the water<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Your head should cut through the water to allow you to breathe frontward. Be cognizant of your leg position; don\u2019t let them drop down as this will cause drag, especially during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Legs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leg action is a backward kick with both legs moving simultaneously after drawing your heels up toward your buttocks by bending your knees. Your feet should face outward during the kick phase so that you can sweep them outward and then back together again at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end of the kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The right time to perform the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leg kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is at the end of the breathing cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Arms<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The breaststroke arm action begins with your body in a horizontal position and your arms extended out in front of your head with your hands close together and your palms facing outward at an angle of approximately 40 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of the pull phase, keep your arms extended and pull almost exclusively outward with your hands for the initial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out-sweep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Once your arms are making a \u201cY\u201d shape, you will begin the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaststroke pull<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bend your elbows and simultaneously rotate your arms so that your hands no longer sweep out in a circular movement but are turned inward until they come together beneath your chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your elbows tucked in during the hand <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recovery phase<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which should take place underwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Breathing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the breaststroke is the most complex stroke, things are pretty easy when it comes to breathing. This is because the natural movement of the stroke is constantly bringing your head out of the water \u2014 unlike breathing during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freestyle,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which takes some mastery of your timing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathe frontward. Raise your chest while you are pulling with your arms and then finish by pushing downward with your chest until you are back in a perfectly horizontal position, so as to exploit the forward thrust coming from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leg kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that then follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Turn<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you turn (and as you finish your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workout<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), your hands must touch the wall at the same time and be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shoulder-width<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> apart. Draw your knees up beneath your chest ready to press them quickly against the wall and then <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push off<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the underwater <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gliding phase<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can perform one complete <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arm stroke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until your hands are along your sides, making one breaststroke <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leg kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and one dolphin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that the breaststroke is so different from the other strokes means that a breaststroker is very often an unusual kind of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimmer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sometimes not particularly talented at the other strokes. So, all you breaststrokers out there, do not worry if you struggle with the other strokes.
