Le 28 juin prochain, l\u2019Ironman de Nice<\/strong> f\u00eatera ses 10 ans. Plus de 2800 participants de nationalit\u00e9s diff\u00e9rentes seront sur la ligne de d\u00e9part de ce triathlon XXL<\/strong> comportant 3 \u00e9preuves : 3.8km de natation, 180km de v\u00e9lo et 42km de course \u00e0 pied. A cette occasion, arena<\/strong> fait un tour d\u2019horizon de cette \u00e9preuve exceptionnelle.<\/p>\n

Comment est n\u00e9 l\u2019Ironman ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

L\u2019Ironman ou \u00ab homme de fer \u00bb en fran\u00e7ais d\u00e9signe le format le plus important des triathlons. De par sa distance impressionnante (3 \u00e9preuves soit 226km \u00e0 parcourir en 16h maximum), il est \u00e9galement appel\u00e9 triathlon XXL ou triathlon tr\u00e8s grandes distances<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est en 1977 qu\u2019est n\u00e9 le concept d\u2019Ironman. John Collins, un ancien commandant de la Navy \u00e9tait \u00ab lass\u00e9 d’entendre ses amis coureurs, cyclistes et nageurs se demander qui sont les athl\u00e8tes les plus r\u00e9sistants \u00bb. Il d\u00e9cida alors de former un triathlon exceptionnel en r\u00e9unissant les 3 comp\u00e9titions sportives les plus importantes se d\u00e9roulant \u00e0 Hawa\u00ef : le Wa\u00efkiki Roughwater Swin (3,8 km en natation), l’Around Oahu Bike Race (179 km de v\u00e9lo) et le marathon d’Honolulu. Il d\u00e9clara alors : \u00ab Whoever finishes first, we’ll call him the Iron Man \u00bb (Celui qui terminera 1er, nous l’appellerons l’homme de fer). C\u2019est donc comme cela que fut donn\u00e9 le nom de cette comp\u00e9tition.<\/p>\n

Ironman : une comp\u00e9tition hors du commun<\/strong><\/p>\n

La premi\u00e8re comp\u00e9tition est disput\u00e9e en 1978 \u00e0 Hawa\u00ef. Douze hommes (sur quinze engag\u00e9s au d\u00e9part) ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 finir la course. Le premier \u00ab Iron man \u00bb du monde \u00e0 avoir franchi la ligne d\u2019arriv\u00e9e en 11h46mn58s fut Gordon Haller<\/strong>. Il faudra attendre l\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante pour voir Lynn Lemaire<\/strong>, la premi\u00e8re \u00ab Iron woman \u00bb, finir en 12h55mn38s.<\/p>\n

Progressivement, la popularit\u00e9 de l\u2019Ironman se fait grandissante, 10 ans apr\u00e8s sa cr\u00e9ation, celui d\u2019Hawa\u00ef rassemble 1400 coureurs. Les organisateurs d\u00e9cident alors d\u2019instaurer un nouveau syst\u00e8me : pour participer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve, il faudra se qualifier dans plusieurs Ironman d\u2019autres villes du monde et terminer \u00e0 une bonne place du classement g\u00e9n\u00e9ral.<\/p>\n

Depuis, plusieurs comp\u00e9titions se sont encore d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es \u00e0 travers le monde avec des participants toujours plus nombreux et des athl\u00e8tes aujourd\u2019hui c\u00e9l\u00e8bres : Mark Allen<\/strong> (US) qui a remport\u00e9 6 fois le championnat du monde \u00e0 Hawa\u00ef et Dave Scott<\/strong> (US) qui l\u2019a gagn\u00e9 6 fois \u00e9galement.
