16th FINA World Championships
DAY FIVE | Thursday 6th August 2015
COMPETITION INSIGHTS
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE FOR GOLDEN TRIO
Gold was glittering on an unforgettable night of swimming at the World Championships in Kazan.
Adam Peaty visited the top of the podium twice in the 50m breaststroke and with the Great Britain 4x100m mixed medley relay squad where Fran Halsall anchored the quartet to a new world record.
László Cseh of Hungary picked up the 11th world medal of his career with victory in the 200m butterfly while Gregorio Paltrinieri was second in the 800m freestyle.
Adam Peaty had already won the 100m breaststroke when he overhauled Cameron van der Burgh on the final stroke on Monday. The pair then traded 50m world records before they went head to head again in the one-length final. Again Cameron had the better start and forged a clear lead before Adam clawed back the deficit and beat the South African for victory by 0.15 seconds in 26.51.
Adam then returned to swim the breaststroke leg as Britain set a new world record of 3mins 41.71secs in the mixed medley relay where Fran Halsall was pitted against male sprinters including Vladimir Morozov of Russia on the anchor leg.
Adam beamed from ear to ear and said: “It’s my first World Championships and I never thought I would walk away with three gold medals like that. Every centimetre, every inch has been one of the hardest. My race with Cameron the other day was one of the hardest I’ve ever done.”
After the medley Fran giggled: “It was good fun. I was saying to my coach beforehand ‘it’s alright James I’ve been chased by uglier, scarier men before so that was fine! World record, gold medal, world champions – it’s fantastic, a nice feeling.”
László Cseh had already shared bronze in the 50m butterfly before he pulled away from Chad Le Clos to win the 200m in 1:53.48, 0.10secs ahead of the South African.
It was the Hungarian’s first world medal in that event and he said: “Back in January I didn’t think that the 200m fly would be the event I would medal in this year. I wanted to have a last shot to return to the top, I changed coach and training methods and it paid off. Today the last 20m were really tough, I didn’t feel my arms but I told myself I wouldn’t let go. I almost cried afterwards but managed to hold it back. I’m strong, you know!”
Gregorio Paltrinieri set a new European record of 7mins 40.81secs to take the silver medal in the 800m freestyle. The Italian, who is only 20, took almost two seconds off the previous record as he continued his rise towards the top in the event.
