16th FINA World Championships
World Championships of Kazan, winning an outstanding 49% of the total medals (pool and open water swimming combined, 73 medals in total: 25 gold, 25 silver and 24 bronze).
58% of individual golds (23 out of 40) went to swimmers wearing a POWERSKIN Carbon-Flex or Carbon-Air suit. Arena Champions further contributed to the fantastic showcase in Kazan by establishing 5 World Records, 4 European Records, 2 Championships record and 3 World junior Championships record.
On the final night of competition, Bronte Campbell led a clean sweep in the 50m freestyle and Katinka Hosszú successfully defended her title in the 400m individual medley.
Gregorio Paltrinieri won the 1500m freestyle, while Daiya Seto held off all his challengers to repeat his victory in the 400m individual medley from Barcelona two years ago.
Bronte Campbell, of Australia, had already won the 100m freestyle with sister Cate, the defending champion, in third. Tonight the younger sister again triumphed in the one-length splash and dash, winning in 24.12 ahead of Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands and Sarah Sjöström of Sweden. Bronte beamed: “That was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe I got the win on that one. This meet, everything has gone right for me, it doesn’t happen very often and I’m going to try to take advantage of it. Three golds and a bronze is more than I could have hoped for coming in.”
Katinka Hosszú had already won the 200m individual medley in a new world record as well as taking bronze in the 200m backstroke. She is known as the ‘Iron Lady’ thanks to the gruelling programmes she undertakes. Tonight she was under world-record pace for much of the 400m individual medley but she fell behind on the freestyle leg, touching in 4:30.39, but still fastest time in the world this year. She said: “I am just really happy to have done the double again, like Idid in Barcelona. It’s been a great championship for me and now I am more happy than tired.”
Daiya Seto of Japan won the men’s equivalent, successfully defending his title in 4:08.50. He said: “I overcame a lot to win this race so I’m really satisfied and happy. I missed the final in the 200 IM and I couldn’t compete against Ryan Lochte so I wanted to show myself in this race.”
Gregorio set a new European record of 14:39.67 to win the 1500m freestyle, the first time an Italian has won that event. Connor Jaeger of the United States finished with silver in 14:41.20. The talking point was the absence of defending champion and four-time 2012 Olympic medallist Sun Yang from China. Gregorio said: “It was really disturbing for me without him, I was afraid to compete alone. I wanted to win this race and without him it was a really tough race but I am really happy now.”
